Livestock rearing is integral to the Indian economy because about 20.5 million people depend upon livestock for their livelihood. It provides livelihood to two-thirds of rural communities in India. An average of 16% of the income of small farm households is derived from livestock. It also employs about 8.8 % of the population in India. The sector contributes 4.11% to the total GDP and 25.6% of the total Agriculture GDP.

Although the production of all major meat types has been increasing in absolute terms, the global market has seen a major shift in trends in the last 50 years. Pig meat, for instance, has shown a 4-5 fold increase in the past few decades. The growth, however, is constrained to countries like China, US, Germany, Spain and Brazil. India, on the other hand, produces only 1% of the global pig meat.

Overview

SDS’s end-to-end services introduce value chain addition in livestock to make the products more valuable so that the farmers and the other stakeholders involved in the rearing and production of livestock can get better returns. Quality is achieved by ensuring better health and husbandry practices, introducing newer and innovative technologies for rearing and production, and providing better marketing and branding of the products.
