The SDS Research and Development Unit drives projects across agriculture, climate, environment, entrepreneurship, monitoring, and strategy. Focused on rural, vulnerable, and excluded communities and generates detailed indicators for informed decision-making. The unit supports various national and regional agencies and institutions to integrate effective social and economic policies, aiming at reducing poverty and livelihood enhancement. Market research is one of our integral aspects of understanding market dynamics for supporting sustainable businesses at the grassroots.

The research unit requires substantial support to ensure quality and timely delivery. It is in this context that SDS would like to recruit a Research Associate, to assist the Unit and its projects with a substantive background in qualitative as well as quantitative research.


  • Perform strategic diagnostic research to identify poverty traps and specific groups of the population that require targeted and specific livelihood and economic interventions.

  • Preparing baseline, need assessment, diagnostic reports, plans, and impact reports  for project support

  • Conducting market research for identifying and scaling business opportunities

  • Performing background research (qualitative and quantitative) on project activities.

  • Provision of technical support and strategic advice on key project interventions, which includes overseeing the research processes at different locations

  • Development Reports, Documentation templates and any other publications of the Unit.

  • Supporting survey design, implementation and analysis for diverse projects in the Research unit

  • Provision of research assistance activities for all other initiatives.

  • Provision of support on the preparation of different types of executive documents derived from the advisory activities.


  • Highly developed qualitative and quantitative research skills; knowledge of household surveys (Questionnaire design, sampling methodology and data analysis) is an additional asset

  • Strong analytical skills, and ability to rapidly analyse and integrate diverse information from varied sources;

  • Computer literate; must be able to use the Internet and other research and applied econometric software such as STATA, effectively.

  • Knowledge of SPSS and NVivo

  • Identifies priority activities and assignments;

  • Teamwork - excellent interpersonal, organizational and management skills and ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in Economics, Social Work or related development field. PhD is an additional asset

Work Ex: Minimum 2- 3 years of experience and Prior knowledge and experience in research and research methodology.
